Is your power supply reliable when the cold weather hits?

2025-12-12

With the arrival of winter and the sharp drop in temperature in many regions, the starting problem of Generator sets in extremely cold environments has once again become a focus of attention. As the core of power generation equipment, why do engines frequently "break down" under low temperatures? Let's take a closer look. Main Reasons Analysis:

1. Increased Lubricating Oil Viscosity

At extremely low temperatures, the viscosity of engine lubricating oil increases significantly, reducing its fluidity and leading to increased internal resistance, making it difficult for the starter motor to rotate the crankshaft.

2. Degraded Battery Performance

Low temperatures reduce the chemical reaction rate of the battery, causing a significant decrease in capacity (at -20°C, capacity may drop to 60% of that at room temperature), making it unable to provide sufficient starting current.

3. Poor Fuel Atomization

Diesel fuel becomes more viscous at low temperatures, making it difficult to atomize. Simultaneously, the cylinder temperature during the compression stroke is insufficient, making it difficult to reach the fuel's auto-ignition temperature.

4. Reduced Compression Pressure

Cold air is denser, but low temperatures also cause cylinder seals to harden and their clearances to change, potentially resulting in insufficient compression pressure and affecting ignition conditions.
